I'm thinking about swapping out the percussion breech plug on one rifle for the flintlock breech plug on another. The flintlock is .50 caliber and the percussion is .58 caliber. M.I have bent a couple by doing the following; Remove the hammer, place the hole area in a vise, heat the neck area to red with torch, bend as needed, then allow to cool before removing from the vise. I sent mine out to Cabin Creek Muzzleloaders to be re-worked.Pull out the wiping stick (ramrod) and pour out the fluid, dry, and oil the bore. Lightly oil all the metal parts, and wipe down the wooden stock. Done. From time to time wipe the stock with something; linseed oil, furniture polish, Marvel Mystery Oil, whatever depending on the type of finish on your rifle stock.Step #2. Get familiar with my hunk of wood. Thoroughly wet it with distilled water to: 1) Raise the grain for sanding. 2) Get familiar with the grain. 3) Discover imperfections. Then I use a scale that has very fine measurement and also measures in pretty much all different units but I use grains. I have said before the first thing to do with a colt clone is to smooth the hammer face. This is the most common cause of cap jams. I use a hard arkansas stone on the face of the hammer to smooth it. I am in the process of finding the most accurate hunting bullet for my 1:38 twist 58 cal carbine In the line up are 580 grain Maxi-ball, 560 grain Maxi-hunter, 440 grain REAL as well as some oversized minie ball 500 grain. I wish I could get my hands on some more maxi-hunters.So here goes---Hawkens 45 and 50 are 15/16. Hawkens 54 and larger 1 inch. Seneca 36 and 45 are 13/16. Renegades are 1 inch. Thin overshot card. Full fiber cushion wad*. *The cushion wad needs to be SATURATED (the wetter and heavier, the better) with oil. I like to use olive oil. For squirrel hunting, I like the .32 for when the leaves are still on the trees and shots are usually inside of 35 yards. No disrespect intended to Stumpkiller, I'm very big into target shooting and competitive shoots. While target shooting i've had many people come over to watch me with a muzzleloader,try mine and then get into muzzleloading at our club shoots.The dovetails on a CVA Hawken are metric (don't know the exact size) smaller than the 3/8 sights most suppliers have. I bought the 3/8 and with a little judicious filing on them they fit the CVA dovetails. I didn't want to enlarge the dovetails in case I went back to the stock sights. The front & rear are the same size.I like the fact that they have a hole cross drilled horizontally in the area where the cap sits. These hole direct the blow back gases outward and help split the cap for easy removal. My other choice of nipples would be the Knight "Red Hot". Both nipples come in sizes to fit your rifles.
